SEMI-SIMPLE: DOT (point), LINE, SURFACE, COLOR AND LIGHT

I use a combination of UV resistant industrial epoxy resin, graphite and acrylic paint on archival tempered wood panel, or acrylic glass panels. The primary intention for this body is to manipulate the basic elements of dot (point), line, color, surface (plane), form and light to create maximum visual impact. My work is mainly inspired by nature, time, space, color, sound, movement, and composition. Lighting plays an important role in the presentation of my work for it maximizes the viewing experience...

COLOR IS APPROXIMATE :: Please note that the colors of the images posted on this blog may be slightly off compared with the original artwork. I strongly encourage you to see the work in person if possible.

For Immediate Release: Stonehill’s Cushing-Martin Gallery exhibits mixed media works by Sand T

EASTON, Mass.- The Cushing-Martin Gallery at Stonehill College is pleased to present Sand T new works, from October 6- November 2nd. Please join us for a reception on Wednesday, October 13th, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm.

Born in Malacca, Malaysia, Sand T has lived in the United States for most of her adult life. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Tufts University and the Museum School in Boston, MA.

Although Sand T’s paintings appear to utilize a simple language of dots, line, and color, they transcend their simplicity through their illusionistic surface depth and reflective nature. For some, the patterns might allude to the moments when our interior bodily rhythms are acknowledged and heard. The fluctuated spacing between lines and between pooled dots remind one of breathing patterns, blood pumping, and a heartbeat. This makes the most sense when one has been especially hyper-aware of one's own body. During meditation or yoga, the breath becomes all-encompassing, when one is operating on pure fear or adrenaline; we feel our blood pumping through our body. Sand T’s paintings slow us down so that we can listen to the inner rhythms of ourselves and respond to the image in front of us.

The artist uses a combination of UV resistant epoxy resin, graphite, and acrylic paint on archival tempered clayboard or acrylic glass panels. The lines are drawn using graphite in varying weights and grades and resin droplets are placed one at a time. She is fascinated with the interplay of the line, dot, and light and where the relationship of harmony and balance play a significant role.

Sand has been the recipient of numerous awards for her work in the visual arts. These include: The 2009 New England Art Awards awarded by the New England Journal of Aesthetic Research in February 2010; an Exceptional Work Award from TLGUTS in June 2009, a Solo Exhibition Award by Caladan Gallery in May 2009; a First Place Award given by Nicholas Capasso, curator of the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park for her submission to a juried show at Clark University in November 2007.
